Three Sheremetyevo runways will allow servicing up to 110 million passengers a year
Thursday December 31, 2020 00:25 MSK / Mikhail Vakhneev / Russian Aviation

December 24, 2020 at the international airport "Sheremetyevo" named after A.S. Pushkin took place a solemn ceremony of putting into operation after a large-scale reconstruction of the first runway (runway-1). The airport now has three runways, capable of 135 takeoff and landing operations per hour.

As a result of the commissioning of runway-1 with two new taxiways of the high-speed exit, the throughput during the operation of a complex of three runways at the Sheremetyevo airfield will increase from 90 to 110 takeoff and landing operations per hour, and in the future, based on the results of the simulation simulation, can reach 135 takeoff and landing operations per hour.

For the first time, an online broadcast of the grand opening of the runway-1 was carried out for tens of thousands of airport passengers at the Sheremetyevo terminals, as well as in the official accounts of MASH, PJSC Aeroflot and the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation in social networks. The famous sports journalist Dmitry Guberniev commented on the event.

The length of the Runway-1 is 3552.5 m, the width of the load-bearing part is 60 m. The runway allows to perform take-off and landing procedures of all types and modifications of Russian and foreign aircraft, including Airbus A380 and also advanced aircraft types. Such values of the aerodrome's throughput create conditions for increasing passenger traffic up to 110 million passengers per year and ensuring the volume of freight traffic of about 1 million tons.

Construction work was carried out in record time - 10 months (01/15/2020 - 10/23/2020) amid a sharp decline in the airport's production activities, a drop in revenue, and the need to comply with the strictest anti-epidemiological measures. Despite the restrictions imposed, construction and installation work was carried out in the operating airport without interruption.

The amount of capital investments exceeded $114 million. The project was implemented at the expense of the airport's own funds. The investments made, under the terms of the concession agreement, will be compensated from the investment component of the aircraft take-off and landing tariff.

The modern airfield and terminal infrastructure of Sheremetyevo opens up wide opportunities for long-term growth and development for basic air carriers and new airlines. The introduction of a new airspace structure and the operation of a complex of three runways at Sheremetyevo airport will improve the fuel efficiency of airlines, the level of safety and punctuality of flights.

The airport has six terminals with a total area of 570 thousand square meters. meters. Over the past four years, the investment program in the development of airport infrastructure amounted to $ 2.5 billion. In the long term, taking into account the further development of infrastructure and bringing passenger and cargo terminals to their design capacity, Sheremetyevo Airport plans to enter the league of the world's largest aviation hubs and strengthen its position as the main transit air hub between Europe and Asia.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Minister of Transport Vitaly Savelyev, the Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration for Support of the State Council of the Russian Federation Alexander Yurchik, the First Deputy Minister of Transport — the Head of Federal Air Transport Agency Alexander Neradko, the First Deputy Minister of Economic Development Mikhail Babich, General Director of Aeroflot PJSC Mikhail Poluboyarinov and Alexander Ponomarenko, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of JSC SIA.

Vitaly Savelyev: “The runway was made in the shortest possible time. I would like to add that this is not just 10 months, this is 10 months of work during a pandemic, and the coronavirus was clearly holding back this process. The work did not stop for a minute, and a lot was done. 200 units of equipment, a lot of workers, engineers, and designers participated in the construction of the runway at the same time. A truly unique work has been done. The length of the runway is 3.5 km, its width is 60 meters, and the depth is 195 cm. 400 thousand cubic meters of concrete was laid in this runway. This unique runway can accommodate all types of modern and all types of advanced aircraft. All this work was done thanks to the leadership of Sheremetyevo. I also congratulate all the engineers, workers and the management of Sheremetyevo. Thank you".

Mikhail Babich: “This project is the level of the national airport, from which the face of our capital begins. Of course, the look that Sheremetyevo is acquiring today evokes a feeling of pride and great respect for the tremendous work that has been done by people who continue to modernize and reconstruct the airport. Projects like the launch of RWY-1 are extremely important. They increase the economic mobility of the population, the investment attractiveness of the capital and our country as a whole."

Mikhail Poluboyarinov: “Sheremetyevo has long been for Aeroflot a home and a very close business partner. The main priorities in the company are passenger care and, of course, economic efficiency. Thanks to the opening of the runway-1, we will be able to taxi faster, save kerosene, and faster deliver our passengers and their luggage to the arrival terminals. Also, the opening of a new runway will play a significant role in our schedule, we will reduce the connection time of transfer flights."

Mikhail Vasilenko: “Thank you all for the appreciation of the work that was invested in the reconstruction, and, in fact, the construction of runway-1. Thank you for the fact that dear colleagues came and participated in the opening”.

As part of the solemn ceremony of commissioning the runway-1, the head of the Federal Air Transport Agency Alexander Neradko presented the Sheremetyevo airport with a new certificate of conformity of the airfield.

Reconstruction of runway-1 "Sheremetyevo" was a priority project this year as part of the implementation of the Long-term airport development program. This is a unique project for the international aviation industry in terms of its technological complexity and short lead times.

After the official speeches, a solemn parade of aerodrome equipment took place on the runway. A convoy of 38 samples of motor vehicles passed along the new runway-1, which in many respects ensures high punctuality, reliability, flight safety, quality of service for airlines and passengers in any weather conditions.

At the end of the ceremony, the base carrier of Sheremetyevo, Aeroflot, took off for the first time from the new runway-1. The aircraft in retro livery performed flight SU 022 "Moscow - St. Petersburg". It is noteworthy that 61 years ago, on August 11, 1959, at 9.45 Moscow time, the first passenger flight landed on the only runway (RWY-1) of the Sheremetyevsky airfield (formerly the central airfield of the USSR Air Force). The Tu-104 airliner delivered 100 passengers from Leningrad. This event began the history of Sheremetyevo International Airport.

Runway-1 history: from foundation to first reconstruction

In 1954 - 1955 work was carried out to prepare the "trough" - the foundation for the runway, taxiway and aircraft parking areas. In 1956, the construction of a runway with dimensions of 3500 x 80 m was completed. The area of the concrete pavement was 280 thousand square meters.

The runway was put into operation in 1957, at the same time they began to operate the main and connecting taxiways, three aprons with parking spaces for aircraft, and the central control room. At the airfield were placed radio and lighting systems for flights.

The first landing of aircraft on the runway took place on October 7, 1957: 18 TU-95 intercontinental bombers, participating in the air parade over Red Square in honour of the 40th anniversary of October, landed at the Sheremetyevsky airport.

On August 11, 1959, the first landing of a civil aircraft on RWY-1 took place. The first runway of the Sheremetyevo airfield (formerly the central airfield of the USSR Air Force) received a passenger flight from Leningrad, performed on the TU-104 airliner.

In 1997, the runway-1 was reconstructed. The new runway lay on the old concrete pavement. Its length was 3550 m, width - 60 m. Concrete of the M-400 and M-500 brands with a thickness of 30-35 cm was laid on an old artificial turf, which had a thickness of 20-22 cm. The area was more than 220 thousand square meters.
