Tu-154M Izhma aircraft installed in the museum of the Tolmachevo airport
Thursday October 18, 2018 12:45 MSK / Andrey Zharkov
On September 29, 2018, the Tupolev Tu-154M aircraft met with the tail number RA-85684 at the Tolmachevo Airport in Novosibirsk, where the aircraft will become a new exhibit in the aviation museum. This aircraft became known all over the country after the incident that occurred on September 7, 2010, when, after losing power, the crew managed to make a heroic landing in the middle of the taiga at the decommissioned Izhma airfield, the runway of which was maintained for many years by the aerodrome worker Sergei Sotnikov.

After the incident, the aircraft was repaired at the Izhma airfield to flight condition and was overtaken by the crew of the honoured test pilot Ruben Yesayan to the Aviakor aircraft repair plant in Samara. The board underwent a major overhaul, after which it returned to the sky and served Alrosa for another 7 years, receiving the popular name Izhma.

At the end of September 2018, the aircraft’s airworthiness period came to an end. However, the leadership of the airline "Alrosa" decided to save the board as a monument to future generations. There was an option to make the aircraft a new exhibit at the aviation museum of the Tolmachevo Airport in Novosibirsk, which is known for keeping carefully the exhibit planes located at the airport terminal.

Thanks to well-coordinated teamwork and the desire of the managers of the airline and the airport to save the plane, we managed to organise its transfer to the museum as soon as possible - a little more than a week.

The flight Mirny-Novosibirsk received a symbolic number 6R-684, corresponding to the aircraft’s on-board number. The commander of the crew during the flight was the hero of Russia Andrei Lamanov, brilliantly put this board in Izhma in 2010. The second pilot - FAC instructor Alexander Leshkevich, navigator - Igor Rodionov, flight engineer - Konstantin Beznogov. Passengers of the flight were aviation enthusiasts, bloggers and media representatives.

On the platform of the Mirny airport, the plane was escorted by the management and staff of Alrosa and the airport. After takeoff, the crew performed a farewell circle over the home town of Mirny.

The flight to Novosibirsk took 2 hours and 40 minutes. In Novosibirsk, the plane was solemnly greeted by airport employees with families and journalists. Also, the plane was met by the hero of Russia Yevgeny Novoselov, who was the commander of the aircraft on that very flight on September 7, 2010. In honour of such an event, a landing was made before the landing.

After a soft landing, the plane taxied onto the platform in a solemn accompaniment of three follow-me cars. The board will stand on the parking, located next to one of the exhibits of the museum - the IL-86.

Now the legendary "Izhma" will be installed in the exposition of the aviation museum at the Tolmachevo airport, and is open to the public in the future. The interior of the aircraft will be preserved, and its systems will remain complete and functional.

It is nice that thanks to the joint striving and efforts of the airline and the airport, the legendary liner was retained for posterity. Now a new and glorious chapter in history begins for Izhma!

On September 7, 2010, the Tu-154M airliner of the Alrosa Airlines operated the YAM516 passenger flight on the Polar (Yakutia) - Domodedovo (Moscow) route. 3.5 hours after takeoff, a full power cut occurred on its board, which led to the shutdown of the onboard navigation systems. The electric drive of the fuel pumps was also turned off, which meant that it was impossible to reach the destination airport or a suitable alternate aerodrome. There was a partial loss of controllability - the invisibility of the control flaps and slats. In this situation, the crew visually found the runway of the former Izhma airport (Komi Republic) on the ground and from the third call was taken to the long-decommissioned and unsuitable for airplanes of this type, the take-off strip, which did not have lighting equipment and driving radio stations. Landing was performed at increased speed. When running the plane rolled out of the runway at 164 meters and drove into the woods. None of the 81 people aboard the aircraft (9 crew members and 72 passengers) were injured. On October 8, 2010, President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia awarded commander Evgeny Novoselov and co-pilot Andrei Lamanov the title “Hero of Russia”. The rest of the crew (navigator, flight engineer and flight attendants) were awarded Orders of Courage. In February 2012, Sergey Sotnikov, head of the helipad in Izhma, was awarded the Medal of the Order for Services to the Fatherland, II degree.
