Moscow Domodedovo Airport Goes On Doubling
Saturday March 18, 2017 09:50 MSK / Yulia Kuzmina
Airport Domodedovo is planning to receive guests of the main football event of the planet in the new segment of the passenger terminal T2. It is one of the key projects on complex development of the airport’s infrastructure.

The construction of the second phase of the Domodedovo’s passenger terminal began in summer of 2015. The project of the architectural concept of the terminal is based on the UNDER ONE ROOF principal: the single terminal allows to use the transfer capacity of the airport complex most effectively.

In the end the area of air terminal complex will increase almost twice - by 235 000 sq.m. the general terminal capacities of the airport will reach 500 000 sq.m. At the same time T2 segment capacity according to the application for the construction project: 2200 passengers / hour on a departure, and in 2600 pass / hour - an arrival. Thus, after the input of T2 in operation the cumulative capacity of the passenger terminal of the airport (T1+T2) is going to make more than 45 million passengers a year.

According to the project manager of construction Alexander Boyko, interchangeable teams of builders work on an object in the round-the-clock mode, and, currently, construction goes according to the approved schedule. More than 1,6 thousand people, 30 units of the construction equipment and 7 tower cranes work on the site.

As planned, in two months monolithic operations will be fully complete. Then there will come the stage of mounting of engineering systems, more than 2,6 thousand people will be involved at this time.

General construction contractor is a Turkish firm Ant Yapi Sanayi ve Ticaret Anonim Shirketi. As Alexander Boyko told, due to the fact that the contract was signed before Russia had imposed sanctions against Turkey, it didn’t affect the project. Date of completion is the I quarter of 2018.

In a new segment of the terminal there will be 7 floors, two of which are  going to be under the ground. The arrival and departure will be divided into two levels. In the registration area wide-span 20-meter load-carrying structures will be mounted, about 100 check-in desks and more than 40 self-registration kiosks will be set.

One of the features of the terminal will be the atrium - a round part of the gallery with a glass dome, on which perimeter business halls, cafe, bars, restaurants and duty-free shops will be located. Also three panoramic elevators will be installed here as well.

Aircraft parking areas will be equipped with boarding bridges, including those for maintenance aircrafts like Airbus A380. The departure - arrival gallery involves 11 exits to the so-called "bridges" leading to the passenger boarding bridges and then - directly to the aircraft.

Two types of passenger boarding bridges are designed — 9 single-level and 2 two-level. Such scheme allows to divide arrival-departure flow and at the same time to serve from 12 to 16 aircrafts. The total number of boarding bridges — 19 as several "bridges" will be equipped with 2 and 3 boarding bridges for reception of types E aircrafts (Boeing 777, Boeing 747-400) and F (A380).

Just recently, Emirates company made the decision to resume flights to Moscow by Airbus A380-800 aircraft. The company announced that since December 1, 2016 double-deck Airbus A380-800 will carry out one of two daily flights of Emirates along a route Dubai — Moscow (Domodedovo airport) — Dubai. Currently, Domodedovo is the only airport in Russia with experience in servicing regular flights of the A380.

For the first time in Russia in T2 aircrafts will be served «down from the ground". For the aircraft handling on parking lots pit systems are provided to connect the aircraft to systems of power supply, ventilation, the sewerage, drinking and technical water supply system.

To ensure uninterrupted power supply T2 in the IV quarter 2017 the 1st turn of Mini-combined heat and power plant will be put into operation. Commissioning of the 2nd phase will be performed in parallel with the construction of the next phase of the terminal - T3. Thus, the general productivity of the electric power of an object will make 24 MW, and the general thermal power — 100 MW.

The project cost is estimated at 1.8 billion rubles. The capacity of the first phase of Mini-combined heat and power plant is enough for ensuring work of modern football stadium on 30 thousand viewers.

It is planned to put into operation the first phase of multi-store parking with a capacity of approximately 1,500 parking spaces located in close proximity to the second segment of the terminal by 2017. Between the parking and the new terminal segment the pedestrian gallery will be organized. It will be held under the road.

The total quantity of parking places, taking into account the commissioning of 2 queues of parking, will be about 3500 parking places. Number of levels: 9 (6 surface and 3 underground). The volume of investment - 2,3 billion rubles. After implementation of this project the general capacity of airport network of personal vehicles parkings will be about 9 000 parking places.

The investments for the construction of T2 and the surrounding infrastructure are made from the company's own funds. The total amount of installation and construction works constitutes 27 billion rubles, and taking into account investments into technological equipment the estimated cost of the project is equal to 32,3 billion rubles. At the moment the construction is completed by 15%, 4 million rubles have been mastered by the end of May.

Prior to the construction of T2, the amount of own Moscow Domodedovo Airport’s investments in construction projects since 1996 were 31 billion rubles. Another 19 billion rubles the airport has invested in technical re-equipment, information technologies and some other the directions.

Over the past 15 years Domodedovo passenger traffic increased by more than 10 times. Domodedovo Airport was opened in 1965, but only in 1992 gained international status. In order to improve the airport infrastructure, replacement of worn-out equipment and reconstruction of the terminal in 1994 the East Line Group began implementation of a number of capital-intensive investment projects, which resulted into the new international hall in 2006. Also the system of integrated ground handling has also been implemented, an international cargo terminal has been built. East Line Group became the managing company of Domodedovo airport in 1997 and started the implementation of the Comprehensive Program of Development of the Airport til 2003. In 2000 the Opening of airport terminal after the reconstruction took place. Domodedovo airport is among the first hundred of the leading airports in the world since 2004. Today the route network of the airport includes 186 directions, 74 of which are unique for the Moscow aviation hub.
