The first production Il-38N was delivered to Russian navy

On July 5th 2014 a solemn handover ceremony dedicated to delivery of the first upgraded Il-38N aircraft to Russian navy was held at the airfield of Gromov Flight Research Institute (Zhukovsky, Moscow Region); the aircraft was named after R.P. Papkovsky.

Ilyushin Company (also known as Ilyushin Aviation Complex) completed the overhaul and upgrade of the first production Il-38N anti-submarine aircraft operated by the aviation of Russian navy under a contract for upgrade of five aircraft of the type.

 

The upgrade included installation of the new target search and track system Novella-P-38, which significantly expanded the vehicles combat capabilities and allowed the aircraft to carry out a wider range of missions.

As agreed upon with the command of Russian naval aviation, the first production upgraded aircraft of the type was named after Radiy Petrovich Papkovsky, outstanding designer of Ilyushin design bureau, who did much for development of Il-38.

Igor Raufovich Zakirov, test pilot of Ilyushin Company, Hero of Russia, who was involved in development of Il-38 aircraft, said that the new navigation and targeting system allows the aircraft to remain in operation for years to come.

Colonel General Vladimir Grigorievich Deyneka, ex-Commander of Russian naval aviation (1994-2000), talked about operation of Il-38 antisubmarine aircraft. Thanks to its design and range it was the first long-range aircraft of the naval aviation.

Alexey Igorevich Serdyuk, head of 859th Combat Employment and Retraining Center of naval aviation of Russian navy, Major General, expressed confidence that Il-38N will significantly expand the capabilities of Russian antisubmarine aviation. «We have been waiting for this aircraft. It is symbolic that the vehicle was delivered to us on the eve of the Naval Aviation Day», - he said.

Upon completion of the ceremony the Il-38N aircraft performed ferry flight from the airfield of Gromov Flight Research Institute to its home base located in Yeysk.

 
Radiy Petrovich Papkovsky – Chief Designer of Ilyushin Company.

He graduated from Moscow Aviation Institute in 1951. He started working as a lathe operator at an aviation plant in 1943. After graduating from the institute he joined the Ilyushin design bureau. He made his way from Design Engineer to Chief Designer (1981). He was involved in development, mass production and operation of special-purpose equipment installed on Il-14, Il-18, Il-28, Il-38, Il-62 aircraft and their modifications.

He performed a large amount of work in the network of development of Il-38 antisubmarine aircraft and Il-76 military-transport aircraft; he was involved in development of aerial delivery system, weapons, emergency and safety equipment, instrumentation package and other special-purpose equipment.

As a Chief Designer he took part in development of all the modifications of Il-76 military-transport aircraft. Since 1982 he supervised all the works related to operation of Ilyushin aircraft, including projects aimed at improving the aircraft performance, extending service life and assuring continued airworthiness of Il-18, Il-62, Il-76, Il-86 airliners. He was the Ilyushin Company’s representative abroad, participated in establishment of contact with foreign companies.

Laureate of Lenin prize (1978), awarded with Orders of the Red Banner of Labor (1969, 1981), Order of the October Revolution (1976), medals “For Valiant Labor” – dedicated to the 100th anniversary of birth of V.I. Lenin (1970), «Veteran of Labor» (1984), «For Valiant Labor in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945» (1991), «50 years of Victory in the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945» (1995), «300 years of the Russian Navy» (1996), «For strengthening the comradeship-in-arms» (2004), as well as the title of “Honored worker of the aircraft industry” (1994).
